“Simon!” Saudett gestured for her husband to sit beside her. “Mother was just getting to the good part. The part about how she killed the Skrull fucking shit stain who called himself my father.”

Simon’s face became awry. “Sheesh, that sounds quite dreadful.”

“He was a dreadful man,” Saudett said, looking at her mother. “You deserved better.”

Anora smiled back warmly. “I found better.”

“Rojas?” Simon queried expectantly. “He is thoughtful and wise. He should be the First Otsoa.”

“Please refrain from saying that aloud any longer, oh son-in-law.” Anora’s stern gaze made Simon quiet down.

“Oh, um, shall we invite Kiana in? She is sitting outside with an awful aura emanating from her. Even Kaplan is giving her a wide berth.”

“Is she?” Anora asked. Then, she said louder, “Kiana is a competent adult who can partake in adult conversations, is she not.”

They heard a snort, and after an awkward amount of time, Kiana pushed through the canvas curtains. Not saying a word, she sat, poured some wine for herself, and plucked up a piece of fried flatbread. Though her eyes met Saudett’s and held them firmly.

Why is she such a wench? Saudett pushed the negative thought away. Hettra’s mercy, she is my sister, and I must try to be civil. Saudett smiled awkwardly back at Kiana.

Kiana averted her eyes.

“Much better!” Simon exclaimed. “Almost the whole family is here now! Minus your wise husband, dear mother.”

“He already knows this story,” Anora said.

“Of course. Please, continue said story,” Simon expressed as he huddled into Saudett’s side.

She took his hand in hers, fingers entwined. He is so kind, gentle, and loving. He is too good to me, compared to how my father treated my mother. Saudett thought about Simon romping around with other men and women as they used to before all these insane things began happening to them. It was enjoyable, but I want us to be alone now that our baby is coming. I do not want to share him any longer.

Anora began to tell her story once again.
